Coming soon...

The University of Tasmania 's Community Music Program is currently developing a new website. It will be here soon.

A Brief History
Formed in 1984 the original ensemble, the University Concert Band, began its first rehearsal with 50 musicians. Today the programme consists of eight 'graded' ensembles including six bands. A team of eight accomplished conductors headed by Mr. Monte Mumford services these ensembles, which cater to over 300 university and community musicians. Since its inception the University of Tasmania Community Music Program has provided the inspiration and impetus for the growth of concert bands both in the public and private school sector as well as in the communities throughout Tasmania.

Beginning Band is open to all ages, and operates in order that anyone wishing to join the University Instrumental Music Programme can learn to play a musical instrument through group tuition in this ensemble. It is aimed at people who have no previous experience in instrumental music.
Development Band provides the next stage of development for musicians who have learnt the fundamentals of their chosen instrument. This ensemble enables the members to build the necessary skills to progress to the next ensemble.
Intermediate Band are musicians who are now ready to perform more advanced music. They begin to develop their ensemble skills through group technical studies and education based concert band literature.
Concert Band , at the next level of performance, provides even greater musical challenges for the members through the increased difficulty of literature and expectations in responsibility. Solid, fundamental music education still forms the major focus for this group. Entrance to this ensemble is by audition.
Symphonic Band was added to the programme at the beginning of the 1992 season. Its aim is to provide an ensemble experience that brings its members closer to the great repertoire of contemporary symphonic wind band literature. Entrance to this ensemble is also by audition.
Wind Orchestra is the pinnacle of performance within the University/Community Instrumental Programme. It is made up of 54 members who are invited to audition for the available positions within the ensemble. A high level of expertise and commitment are required from the participants, as the ensemble performs music which is generally orchestral in nature and demanding in both musicianship and professional skill. This ensemble tours regularly and continues to receive recognition for its commitment to excellence throughout Australia and New Zealand.
